White Bird of Paradise
We don't know about you, but any plant with the word paradise in it makes us Prickle with excitement imagining ourselves in a tropical paradise of our own! Fortunately, the White Bird of Paradise plant doesn't disappoint! This striking house plant has big green leaves that grow unbelievably tall if you have the patience. Its name comes from the jungle animal, birds-of-paradise, which has the same bright orange and purple colouring as the flower some variations grow (not this one though).
This South African native can never have enough sun or humidity. So keep it in bright, indirect sunlight in a warm (21-28°C, min 13°C) and humid environment. During summer you can even pop your Strelitzia plant outside for some extra vitamin D! This tall, indoor plant is a fast grower and can get quite big (max 3 m). Be sure to rotate it to encourage even growth. Don't panic if your Bird of Paradise has some split leaves, this is normal.
To care for your Bird of Paradise plant, mist it on occasion and regularly water it, be sure not to let it sit in water though! If you notice any brown marks, this could be that it has been given too much fertilizer. Just like you'd want to keep a real bird away from your cat or dog, you should also keep your Bird of Paradise plant away from them as it is toxic to pets and children.
